Welcome to Geelong Otway Tourism's Sustainable Tourism section, designed to keep you, the business operator informed of the issues, ideas and solutions that can affect your business.
This region's natural and cultural assets are a major drawcard for domestic and international visitors. Protection and conservation of these assets is vital for the survival and sustainable growth of the tourism industry over the longer term.
The challenge is to encourage the development and management of tourism products and services that will provide economic and social benefits to local communities while protecting and enhancing our natural and cultural attributes.
The focus on sustainability was prompted by a survey of members, with respondents indicating sustainable tourism was at the top of their priorities, ahead of strategic marketing!
What is 'sustainable tourism'? The World Tourism Organisation describes it as: 'Tourism that meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunity for the future'.
